How to remove paint from antique clock?
I recently purchased a wall clock from New Haven, I think it was in the mid 19. Does not work. The mechanism can be removed, perhaps sent to a restoration shop. That said, the clock was painted black. This was not done by the manufacturer or owner, but probably by an antique dealer to hide surface imperfections, so it is easier to sell. If I had known this would not have bought. This painting is flawed. I have two options. I can paint it black again, or, my preference, I can chemically remove the paint and varnish, so they stand out as it did originally. Then I'm a carpenter, I do not know if this idea can be run properly painted, or how to score, or is it something I can do, or rather in the hands of a professional. Please advice.
First, you must determine if it is veneer or solid. Putting chemicals in the lining may be quickly damaged and could start smart! If you like black, fine-grained sand lightly and paint with milk paint. Otherwise, I'd do a small section near a board to determine what that is actually under the paint. Formby is good. Kutz is fast.
