What to do with his Waltham! A little history and some tips for repairing Antique Clocks!
The Waltham Watch Company, founded by Aaron Dennison David Davis and Edward Howard pioneered the manufacture of interchangeable parts. Created in the United States, Massachusetts, to be more specific and integrated In 1851, there was a wide range of affordable and pocket watches in a large factory on the banks of the Charles River in Waltham, Massachusetts. The city is about 10 miles west of Boston.
After starting the company soon had financial difficulties and was sold at auction of Sheriff, M. Dennison and Edward Howard, embarked on creating the first company to mass production of clocks. After several years of difficulties and setbacks, the best engineers and skilled workers were finally employed, which greatly increases production of watches at low prices in the 1860s. The Waltham company has changed several times during the 1800s and with each change in watches of the more unique, but most collectibles, pocket watches old to come before the turn of the century. Watches Railroad are especially prized by collectors, for several reasons, although the faces are very clear. The quality of railway clocks was very high, exceeded only by timers and the company was also the first to meet the needs of the railway industry, but were quickly followed by all other major American watch manufacturers, including Illinois, Elgin and Hamilton. These are pocket watches, often up to 23 rubies and six adjustment positions instead of five, who are the most sought after by collectors. The American watch manufacturers were primarily obsessed with uniformity their movements. The Waltham Clock Company continued to mass-produce hits until 1957.
Old pocket watches are not precise compared to today's standards. A watch Nice, clean and tight with care, can achieve an accuracy of + / – one minute for each 24 hours. Boxes clocks were made in a variety of metals. You can usually tell what type metal that makes your case look inside the back cover. Watches must keep accurate time in fractions of minutes per week. They must be insensitive to temperature changes or the direction in which they were conducted. The parties to the case, as the glasses are not generally available, but must be taken on a clock. The generic parts such as crowns and crystals can usually but not always, be obtained. The cases are improved the crystals are cleaned and polished bands. The watches use mechanical energy from a source of the wound. They keep time through a press regulated energy by the train wheels, a set of gears and exhaust.
Here are some fashion tips for the old man's going:
Extraction of power, the Movement – The first thing to do is take the watch, or rather its mechanism or "movement". outside the box. In Waltham, the movement is in fact the case by two screws dog on the edge of the backplate. After completing these, the movement can be pushed inside him. It was reported that nearly two is a small pin on the edge of the movement, which fits into a hole in the case of the point and continues the movement in position when the screws are tight dog. Having taken the exit will move in a frame containing the barrel and the wheels. In front of her is the field and back, held the key to balance. This, combined with the spiral is really the most important part of the clock, time depends, and serves the same purpose as the pendulum clock. When set vibrating, or roll back the influence of the spiral, to move with some regularity, whether in just over one quarter of all or a stretch and a half turns. In fact, it is most watches very little difference between the times of vibrations in the short and long, but it can be ignored for the present. The consequence of this equality in the period of vibration of the scale, is that every time the clock mechanism is in good condition and capable of maintaining the balance of vibration, the clock is sure keep time fairly good, provided that the balance and the spiral are themselves in perfect order. If the balance is defective or spring, then the best possible mechanism in the rest of the guard that you will do well. The essence of balance are: must be in perfect balance – It is, its rim must not have side effects heavy, but exactly balanced, so whatever the position of the watch remains, the balance will do the same. It should be thin and smooth pivots, working in good jewel mounting holes and smooth the ends of the axles must be based on the stones of the end without problems. The balance should rotate freely, without being interrupted by the presence of stones in the final pivot, but only minor consequence of livestock or the end of Shake to ensure complete freedom. The balance should not touch nothing, because turns or freedom of movement will suffer. For example, the balance cross-arm sometimes touches the outer coils of the spiral, and if so, can not control time. The spiral must be flat and true in its rings, vacillating that the balance is, and should not touch anything. So the first thing seen, taking care of his case, is the balance and the spiral. Give him a ride and see if they actually tour. Hold the watch to light and turn sideways as the pivots of the balance on tour. If stress, an oscillation will be visible. Test the shock on the final points of a pair of tongs, lifting the tire balance and fell to again to see what lift you have. In doing so, you may not see the edge, and can be folded, and thus be misleading, but beware of the roller or upper pivot. Then, the exact amount of lift can be seen. If the balance seems to be true and free spring beware. If this is also free, and it seems perfect, the balance cock, may be kidnapped, tied together with the balance and spring, and adopted as we have done.
